Robust, hearty. They have lined patterns throughout the body. They are black and white usually but they can be brown, red, green, gray, yellow, or orange. Their colors can change according to their mood, surroundings, or other factors. Some have saddle markings and/or cirri. Native along the Atlantic coastal areas of the U.S. and the Gulf of Mexico, but they have been found from as far south as Brazil to as far north as Nova Scotia.
Size: 5-7 inches, possibly 8 inches. The males are usually larger than the females.
